How can we have assurance that we have Eternal life?

Text

Assurance of eternal life is not a distant hope or a reward for religious striving. It is the present possession of everyone who understands and believes the Gospel of grace. This assurance is not built on your performance, your feelings, or your ability to keep the law. It stands solely on the finished work of Jesus Christ—His righteousness, His sanctification, and His reward—freely given to those who believe.

Justification by Faith: The Display of God’s Righteousness

The foundation of assurance is justification by faith. This is not a secondary doctrine; it is the heart of the Gospel and the very means by which God vindicates His own righteousness. When you believe the Gospel, God does not merely forgive you—He declares you righteous with the righteousness of Christ Himself. This is not your own righteousness, nor is it the result of your law-keeping or religious effort. It is God’s righteousness put on display for all to see.

Satan’s accusations are not just against you—they are against God’s character. The enemy claims that God cannot be just while justifying sinners and making them sons and heirs. But the Gospel silences every accusation: God remains righteous while justifying the ungodly, because Christ has fulfilled all righteousness on your behalf. To seek assurance anywhere else is to undermine the very justice of God and the sufficiency of Christ’s work.

  • Justification: You are declared righteous by faith alone (Romans 3:28).
  • Sanctification: Christ is your sanctification (1 Corinthians 1:30); holiness is not a process you perform, but a Person you have received.
  • Reward: Christ Himself is your reward and inheritance (Colossians 3:24; Genesis 15:1).

The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16), and in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith (Romans 1:17). This is not a theoretical truth—it is the ground of your assurance.

Guarding Your Crown: Refusing to Be Moved from the Gospel

Assurance is not automatic if you neglect the Gospel. The New Testament repeatedly warns: do not be moved away from the hope of the Gospel. If you allow yourself to be carried off by philosophies, legalism, asceticism, or any teaching that is “not according to Christ,” you will lose your assurance, become unfruitful, and fall prey to confusion and deception (Colossians 2:18-19).

The Gospel does the work of discipleship in you. As you abide in Christ and His word, you are supplied with the Spirit, discernment, confidence, and hope. This is what it means to “guard your crown.” Jesus Himself warns: “Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown” (Revelation 3:11). To let go of the Gospel is to forfeit the very assurance and fruitfulness that God intends for you.

If you accept the error that assurance is found through law-keeping or human effort, you lose everything the Gospel provides. You become vulnerable to accusation, weighed down by legalistic burdens, and robbed of the confidence and joy that belong to heirs. The Gospel alone is the source of hope and the supply of the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14; Galatians 3:1-6). To move away from it is to be disqualified from the enjoyment of your inheritance.

Trusting in God’s Love: Heirs and Children, Not Slaves

Salvation and inheritance are inseparable (Ephesians 1:11). The Gospel answers every accusation, not by pointing to your works, but by declaring your identity as a beloved child and heir of God (Romans 8:33-34). You are not under a hard taskmaster waiting to shame you; you are under the care of a loving Father who has made you complete in Christ.

To trust in God’s love and His view of you as an heir is to rest in the assurance that your salvation and inheritance are secure. This is not presumption—it is faith in the One who has promised and accomplished everything for you.

Assurance from Christ’s Righteousness: Boldness Without Fear

Your confidence before God, both now and at the final judgment, is anchored in Christ’s righteousness, not your own (Romans 5:19). Because you are clothed in His righteousness, you can approach God with boldness, free from fear and condemnation (Hebrews 4:16; 1 John 4:17-18). This is not a theoretical comfort—it is the practical reality of the Gospel.

When you rest in Christ as your righteousness, sanctification, and reward, you are freed from the spirit of bondage and fear. You are supplied with the Spirit, made fruitful in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and furnished with an abundant entrance into His kingdom (2 Peter 1:11).

If you surrender the Gospel for law-keeping, human effort, or any teaching that shifts your confidence from Christ to yourself, you forfeit assurance, fruitfulness, and the very supply of the Spirit. You lose the boldness to approach God, the confidence of your inheritance, and the joy of sonship. This is not a secondary matter—it is salvific. The Gospel is the only ground for assurance, and to move away from it is to lose everything.

Hold fast to what you have. Let no one take your crown. Stand in the assurance that is yours in Christ alone.
