From John: Who Are the Thieves and Robbers?
Orientation
The spiritual landscape is filled with voices that subtly undermine the Gospel's simplicity, shifting our gaze from Christ to ourselves.
- These voices are described as 'thieves and robbers' who do not enter through Jesus, the true door.
- Their aim is to steal, kill, and destroy by distorting the message of faith and grace.
- They oppose the Gospel not always blatantly, but by complicating it and robbing believers of assurance and rest in Christ.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. (John 10:1)
— John 10:1
Clarification
The danger is not only from obvious opponents but also from well-meaning enablers who prioritize stability over truth.
- 'Hirelings' are those who serve for a wage—praise, position, or a misguided hope of reward—not from genuine care for the sheep.
- When deception arises, hirelings may avoid conflict, enabling wolves to harm the flock and perpetuating error.
- A hireling's operation in the flesh can blur the line, making them an unwitting participant in the thief's destructive work.
But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. (John 10:12-13)
— John 10:12-13
Structure
God provides a clear contrast between deception and truth through the figures of the Door, the Shepherd, and the faithful porter.
- Jesus is the only Door to the sheepfold and the true Shepherd who gives abundant life (John 10:7, 9-10).
- True 'porters' or gatekeepers know the Shepherd's voice, guard the truth, and open the way to spiritual nourishment in Christ.
- This biblical logic sets the simplicity of the Gospel against all alternative entries, which are by definition theft.
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10:9-10)
— John 10:9-10
Weight-Bearing Prose
The core assertion is Christological: Jesus alone is the door to the sheepfold. Anyone not entering by Him is a thief and robber (John 10:1). Their opposition targets the Gospel of grace itself, seeking to steal, kill, and destroy by distorting the message of faith (Galatians 1:6-9). This is not a minor doctrinal dispute but a fundamental assault on the means of life. Paul’s category of ‘another gospel’ directly applies here. The ‘hireling’ represents a secondary but serious problem: those who, though perhaps saved, operate in the flesh. Motivated by wages (human praise or misguided attempts to earn divine favor), they fail to protect the flock from wolves and may enable deception. Their priority is often stability over truth. In contrast, God provides true porters who know the Shepherd’s voice, guard the fold, and open the door to Christ. The believer’s safeguard is to remain in the simplicity of the Gospel, which fosters growth in the knowledge of Christ and the discernment to cling to what is excellent.
Integration
Your safety and nourishment are found in Christ, the true Door and Shepherd. He gives life abundantly. The purpose of this teaching is not to make you suspicious or fearful, but to anchor you more firmly in Him. Your assurance rests on the Gospel you believe, not on your ability to spot every error. Christ is your righteousness, sanctification, and reward. He secures your place in the fold. Any voice that points you away from His finished work—to yourself, your performance, or a complicated system—is a thief. But you know the Shepherd’s voice. Rest in Him. The faithful porter’s role is simply to open the door to this pasture, where you find all sufficiency in Christ. There is no pressure to advance, only the invitation to abide in the simplicity that is in Christ.
