From Hebrews: The Hidden Food of Spiritual Maturity
Orientation
Many believers remain in spiritual uncertainty, not because salvation is unclear, but because they have not been shown the fullness of their inheritance in Christ.
- The foundational gospel ('milk') brings assurance of salvation and freedom from condemnation.
- Remaining only on these basics can leave one feeling spiritually immature and tossed about.
- The invitation is not to a higher demand, but to a deeper rest and enjoyment of what is already yours in Christ.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Hebrews 5:12-14)
— Hebrews 5:12-14
Clarification
Moving from 'milk' to 'meat' is not about earning a better standing, but about accessing the rest and inheritance secured by Christ's finished work.
- 'Meat' refers to the deeper spiritual blessings and understanding of our position in Christ, not a new set of rules.
- The goal is not personal maturity for its own sake, but to enter the rest of ceasing from self-effort and enjoying Christ.
- This progression is based on faith in Christ's blood, not on our spiritual performance or worthiness.
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. (Hebrews 4:9-11)
— Hebrews 4:9-11
Structure
Biblical logic reveals that Christ, as our High Priest within the veil, is both our living hope and the substance of our spiritual inheritance.
- Christ's entry into the true holiest place anchors our hope and grants us access to God's presence.
- This access, by faith, transforms us as we behold Him, changing us from glory to glory by the Spirit.
- The 'hidden wisdom' of God in Christ is revealed to the spiritual man who has the mind of Christ.
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. (Hebrews 6:19-20)
— Hebrews 6:19-20
Weight-Bearing Prose
The Pauline distinction is between the natural man and the spiritual man (1 Cor 2:14-15). The natural man, even a religious one, cannot receive the things of the Spirit—the hidden wisdom of God in a mystery, which is Christ as the fullness of the Godhead bodily and the Church as His body. This wisdom is revealed by the Spirit to those who are spiritual, who possess the mind of Christ. The central typology is the High Priest within the veil. This is not about a physical location but a finished, priestly work that grants believers access into God’s own presence. This access is the basis for ceasing from self-effort (entering rest) and for transformation. The alternative is regression to elementary principles or old religious forms, which Paul identifies as a failure to progress and a form of spiritual infancy. The inheritance—Christ Himself—is incorruptible and secured by God’s oath and covenant. Perseverance through trials is of faith in this living hope, not of works. The fear of death and bondage is broken by Christ’s redemptive work, delivering believers into the liberty of sonship.
Integration
Your standing before God is settled in Christ. The invitation to see more of Him is an invitation to rest, not to strive. The anchor of your soul is sure and steadfast because Jesus has already entered within the veil on your behalf. There is no pressure to advance, only the gracious offer to enjoy what is already fully yours in Him. Beholding Christ, not building your own maturity, is the path. The Spirit works transformation as you look to Him. Your inheritance is Christ, and He is your reward. This is your assurance and your peace.
