Did you know that Jesus is called an Apostle? “Apostle” means “sent one”—and He is the One sent by God to accomplish redemption for us. But more than that, He is the One who, having finished the work, now stands as our Representative before the Father. His incarnation, atoning death, and resurrection have fully purged our sins, and He has sat down at the right hand of God, declaring that the work is finished and nothing remains to be added.
Jesus: Our Advocate and Representative
Because Jesus has completed the work of justification, He alone is qualified to stand before the Father as our High Priest. He does not merely sympathize with us from afar; He actively represents us, identifying us as His own sheep—those who hold the profession of faith in Him. Our profession is not a weak hope or a mere aspiration; it is the confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who has accomplished everything necessary for our salvation.
This is not a mere theological detail. Jesus Himself declares before the Father, “Yes, Father, those who have this profession are Mine. Of them, I will lose none. They are Mine to care for.” This is the very heart of His prayer in John 17:
“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world. They were Yours; You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” (John 17:6)
Because of this, no accusation—whether from the enemy, the flesh, or the world—can stand against those who belong to Him. He silences every charge, not by appealing to our performance, but by presenting His finished work.
The High Priest Who Perfects and Maintains Our Faith
What does a true High Priest do? He perfects and maintains the profession of those He represents. Jesus is not a passive observer; He is actively interceding for us, ensuring that our faith is sustained and perfected. He does not leave us to the mercy of our own strength. He brings us through every assault, every temptation, every accusation—whether from the enemy, our flesh, or the world.
The book of Hebrews exposes the real danger: the temptation to shrink back, to fear God as a hard master, to revert to law, or to reject the gospel altogether. This is not a theoretical risk; it is the very thing that would destroy assurance, inheritance, and sonship. If Jesus were not interceding for us, if He were not maintaining our profession, we would inevitably fall away. The former priests could not continue in their office and could not keep the people in their profession. Their ministry was limited and ultimately powerless to secure anyone’s standing before God.
But Jesus is categorically different.
The Guarantee of Perseverance: His Incorruptible Life
Jesus is not like the priests who came before. He lives forever, possessing an incorruptible life. He ever lives to make intercession for us. This is not a sentimental comfort; it is the very foundation of our security. Because He is faithful and unchanging, He maintains us before the throne and keeps us in our profession of faith. He is our help in temptation, our Advocate when we stumble, and our Keeper when we are weak.
If you imagine that your perseverance depends on your own strength, you have already begun to drift toward the error Hebrews warns against. To accept any system that puts the burden back on you is to undermine the finished work of Christ, to collapse the doctrine of justification, and to forfeit the assurance of sonship and inheritance. If Jesus is not actively interceding, then there is no guarantee you will not fall away. The entire covenantal promise would be rendered void, and the gospel itself would be emptied of its power.
But because He lives, because He intercedes, because He is the High Priest who perfects and maintains our profession, we are kept. We will not fall away—not because of our resolve, but because of His faithfulness.
“Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25)
The Only True Security
Rest in this: Jesus is not a historical figure who left us to fend for ourselves. He is the living Apostle and High Priest, the One who eternally represents you before the Father. Your perseverance, your inheritance, your very sonship are secured—not by your grip on Him, but by His unbreakable hold on you. To trust anything else is to lose everything. To trust Him is to be kept forever.
